AT last! I got to make a Queen today, the “Queen of Self Awareness.” Self awareness is #7 in the Ten Virtues for the Modern Age. I am having so much fun dreaming up an interpretation of each virtue. Since I get to make the rules, I am not making my queens in order of the 10 virtues.
It takes courage to grow up and turn out to see who you really are. “Self awareness is to know oneself and try not to blame others for one’s troubles and moods; to have a sense of what’s going on inside oneself, and what actually belongs to the world.”
I found the image of the lady in a magazine with the word “artist”. I hid her face beneath actual window screen with a cardstock printout of a shabby window frame. I made a hole in the screen for the word ARTIST to be seen clearly. Since I am the only artist I can speak for, I recorded my strengths and weaknesses in shining gold jelly pen ink.
Without the confessional surrounding the screened window, no one would know the real ME. Don’t we go through life screened? With little holes to expose the things that we want folks to know.
The point of self awareness is that you also have to remove the screen to see yourself.
I put her crown on the outside of the screen on purpose. Because the Artist is aware she isn’t really a queen. She isn’t a diva. She doesn’t need a crown and wouldn’t wear one if you gave it to her. When I was gluing drawer handle escutcheons for her crown I could almost hear her say, “Really? I need a crown? Well, do it if you must!”
I love this story! Thank you Patty.
