Happy National Left Handers Day!

necklace_9I love serendipity!  Since I am always looking for inspiration I checked out the National Days Calendar to see if there were any interesting celebrations in August.  Well I got a boat load of inspiration:  National Vinyl Record Day, National Leathercraft Day, National Thrift Shop Day, World Honey Bee Day and National Aviation Day.  Look OUT, because I have some cool ideas to commemorate all of the above!  I took note of National Left Handers Day because one of my children is a lefty but no left handed ideas popped into my head so I passed on that National Day.

This weekend my friend Laura and I went to a few local garage sales and low and behold I found this ceramic wall statue….. of a left hand!  It was $5.00 which is a little steep for my repurposing budget but it was SERENDIPITY!  I had to have it!  I was so excited about repurposing it I forgot to take a before photo. Truthfully this is not much of a makeover, all I did was attach a large watch face to a chain and put the saying:

For fun I did a little research about left handedness and discovered this interesting quote :  “If the left side of your brain controls the right side of your body, and the right side of your brain controls the left side of your body, then left-handed people must be the only ones in their right minds.”~ W.C. Fields

I think I hear an “amen”  from a choir of left handed folks!  LOL

The Bible mentions left handedness two times: “And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword.  Among all this people there were 700 chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth and not miss.  Judges 20:15

But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab. Judges 3:15

Wow, these lefty’s were really special!

As for me, when I was starting to teach my son to feed himself with a spoon I placed it in his right hand and he promptly put it in his left hand and it dawned on me:  He’s a lefty!  I guess 10% of the folks in the world are left handed and it would be fun to hear if any of my followers are in that happy band of Lefty’s.  I say to you “Happy Left Handers Day!”

  1. I have a brother who’s left handed; surprised none of my 4 children are! Mom said she even tried the spoons that were supposed to make the toddler eat with the right hand and he used it in the left; There weren’t left handed scissors and things when he was growing up so he was always very creative with adapting to our right handed world! It’s made him a great engineer and mechanic as well as musician.
