Porthole #2

UPCYCLED WOOD FRAME “CALM SEAS”

The round wood frames that I got at a rummage sale recently have been waiting patiently for me to make them into portholes and this shiny copper foil “porthole” was really fun to make!

FOUR WOOD FRAMES TO TURN INTO PORTHOLES!

Copper foil leafing is really easy to do!

Step #1.  Cover the frame with a good coat of this sticky adhesive, I use a rubber glove and apply with my fingers because I dislike cleaning brushes.  LOL

Step #2.  After the adhesive dries clear,  place the copper foil leaf over the frame and apply the foil all around the frame.  Sometimes the adhesive still feels sticky even after the frame is covered with the copper leaf so I dust some Perfect Pearls (copper colored) with a brush and it removes the tackiness.

Step #3.  Cut the tops of brass fasteners so they can be attached as faux rivets.

Step #4.  Attach “rivets” with hot glue around the frame.

I cut some 300lb watercolor paper and painted the sky with my favorite blue:  “Cloudless”, some white and a tiny bit of yellow.  I like to use my fingers to blend the colors.

Next, pencil in the pattern of the waves:

I couldn’t even tell you how many colors I used on the sea!  I just keep adding colors and blending them, adding more to make more layers.  And yes I use my fingers to paint!

Finally I cut two seagulls from a necklace pendant I purchased last weekend at a garage sale and glued them on at jaunty angles.

I have two more round wood frames left to upcycle into portholes I think I will make one of them silver foil and the other one gold foil.  But tomorrow is National Leathercraft Day so I am getting out a leather pouch to make something whimsical and fun.
