Make Your Own Jewelry Findings

It is fun to make your own jewelry findings because you can make something that is truly one of a kind and save some money at the same time.  I like digging around my studio for unusual shaped objects I can use for wrapping 18 gauge copper wire.

This screw driver handle was just the ticket to make two earring findings.  I liked the triangular shape.

I left the wire on the findings about 2″ long and set those aside while I made some jump rings.

Jump rings are super easy to make and if you use thick wire like 18 gauge copper wire you won’t have issues with things slipping through the jump ring closure.  That is the most irritating thing that happens when making your own jewelry!!!

After winding the wire onto an awl or other round object, make a cut where the wires come full circle.  Keep snippng them and lining up the cutter full circle all the way up the coil.

Your jump rings will be slightly open and will be really easy to add other elements and they will be a snap to close if you use two needle nose pliers.  One plier attached to one side and the other plier moving to close the gap.

There are no design rules when making earrings.  The fun is making something you have never seen before.  I like a lot of moving parts so I put 5 jump rings on my home made earring finding and attached seed bead strands that will make a lot of movement.  I did use ready made fish hook earring findings that matched my shiny copper wire.  Ta DAH!  Home made findings are fast and easy to make for a OOAK look.
