I happened upon a recipe to make a homemade version of Altoid Mints and although the recipe does make lovely tasting mints…they are not close to Altoid mints. The package of gum paste powder was enough for two batches which was nice because my when making my first batch I made some boo boo’s.
I was really happy with the second batch! I added a drop or two of green food color and they turned out a pretty minty shade of green.
The recipe is:
2 cups dry gum paste, 2 Tbls. water, 1 tsp. peppermint extract (and some powdered sugar to use in cutting the pieces later).
My first batch I cut the pieces too large and dried them for two hours in a 170 degree oven. The oven made the pretty white pieces turn a disgusting beige!
For my second batch I used some green food color and cut the pieces much smaller!
A silicone mat covered with powdered sugar makes easy work of forming “rolls” and cutting the pieces. Extra powdered sugar is nice to run the knife through so the mint mixture won’t stick to the knife.
Pull off handful sections and roll on the powdered sugar.
Cut the roll into little pieces about 1/2″ wide. Roll the pieces in the powdered sugar before you transfer them to a cookie sheet for drying.
I set these aside on a shelf in the living room for three days while they completely dried out. MMMM yummy!

Wow I never heard of making mints before! Looks like a lot of work, but I’m glad your second batch turned out. I like the tin, too. 😀
