I’m Patty Thurlby, a full time artist with a whimsical point of view.
I love to go on creative adventures. Sometimes the adventure starts with an idea, and I collect what I need to make it. Sometimes looking at what I have collected, turns into an idea! I love serendipity.
I started to call myself an artist in 1990 when I was accepted into my first art gallery and my mixed media pieces started selling. I had my day job but usually spent every other weekend having an “artquake” filling up my studio with new pieces and distributing them to various galleries the next weekend. In 2005 I retired from my day job in dentistry and started paying the bills making repurposed crafts with a whimsical theme.
I live in Seaside, Oregon, a quaint resort town on the North Coast of Oregon. We have lots of gray days but when the sun comes out our town grows from 6,000 up to 30,000 with tourists filling all the hotels and VRBO’s.
I sell my artful creations at shops dotting the Oregon Coast. I also have two Etsy shops, LittleLaLaOriginals, and Whimziville. LittleLaLaOriginals features unusual stained glass window valances and Whimziville contains all things craft.
Recently I have been dipping my toes back in the fine art scene. I have made some larger mixed media pieces for Sunrose Gallery. As a consummate goal setter, I set a new goal on New Years Day this year (2017) to apply to the Portland Art Museum Sales and Rental Gallery. That has set forth a flurry of activity! Ordering new art paper and paint. Ordering frames and glazing. And finally getting the photos of the completed art uploaded for the jury. WHEW! I will be notified by the end of June if I have been accepted. As an artist, it takes a little courage to try new doors, but as they say, “no risk, no reward.”
UPDATE: These are the pieces I submitted to the Portland Art Museum Sales and Rental Gallery in May. They didn’t make the cut. I admit I was a little relieved because applying was a little out of my comfort zone, so they are on their way to a local art gallery where they will have a chance to sell.
